6th graduation ceremony for mobile crane and forklift operators held at RMU

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jnr., has reaffirmed the university’s commitment to equipping young people with critical employable skills through strategic partnerships and innovative training programs. Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the sixth cohort of skilled mobile crane and forklift trainees at the RMU campus in Nungua, Greater Accra, Dr. Brooks highlighted the institution’s focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and apprenticeship programs as key drivers for addressing youth unemployment and fostering innovation in Ghana.

He emphasized the transformative potential of these initiatives, describing apprenticeship programs as essential pathways for skills development to meet the demands of both the local and global economy. At the ceremony, 54 trainees, including four women, were awarded certificates in Forklift and Mobile Crane operations after completing an intensive eight-week training program. This initiative was facilitated through a partnership between RMU and the National Association for Heavy-Duty Equipment Operators Ghana (NAHOEG), established under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022. The partnership aims to enhance the competencies of operators by equipping them with the relevant skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the job market.

Dr. Brooks also highlighted RMU’s comprehensive approach to youth empowerment, referencing the Ghana Maritime Authority Marine Engine Mechanic (MEM) program. This six-month training initiative is designed to prepare individuals for sea-going careers without requiring a West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificate. According to Dr. Brooks, the program equips participants with practical skills, enabling them to secure employment on sea vessels within nine to twelve months of graduation.

As the leading maritime training institution in West Africa, RMU also offers traditional two- and four-year programs to provide young people with diverse career opportunities. Dr. Brooks revealed that four major shipping lines currently recruit approximately 200 RMU graduates annually, with demand for skilled workers continuing to grow.
