The Regional Maritime University (RMU) and The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) are set to sign an MOU, strengthening their collaborative efforts

In a significant move towards fostering collaboration and mutual growth, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is poised to deepen its relationship with the Regional Maritime University (RMU) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This development follows a constructive working visit by Mr. Iain Nuttall, the Area Operation Manager Africa of ABS, and Mr. Steve Bimpeh, the In-Charge Principal Surveyor of ABS.

The delegation, led by Mr. Nuttall, was warmly received by the Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, Dr. Jethro Brooks Jnr. The primary objective of the visit was to familiarize ABS officials with the university’s study areas and explore potential avenues for collaboration.

Discussions during the meeting encompassed various aspects of partnership, including the provision of scholarships for academically gifted yet financially challenged students. Additionally, both institutions deliberated on ways to enhance the technical expertise of RMU’s technical staff, ensuring they receive the necessary certifications to excel in their respective fields, particularly within the ABS framework.

Mr. Nuttall commended RMU as a serious institution, expressing ABS’s readiness to associate with and support the university in bolstering the technical know-how of its students. The focus of the partnership aims to create a robust educational environment that prepares students for success in the job market.

The meeting also touched on the development of a model video conferencing center to facilitate online class sessions, a proposal advocated by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Jethro Brooks. This initiative aligns with the evolving landscape of education and underscores the commitment of both institutions to advancing technological infrastructure for the benefit of students.

Dr. Brooks emphasized the need for an official collaboration agreement to solidify and amplify the relationship between RMU and ABS. The two parties have agreed to initiate collaborative efforts in early 2024, marking the beginning of a concerted effort to create a stronger alliance for the benefit of staff and students from both institutions.

As the RMU and ABS gear up for this promising venture, the anticipated MOU signing signals a new chapter in their relationship, promising increased opportunities, knowledge exchange, and collaborative advancements in maritime education and technical expertise.
