The Regional Maritime University (RMU) and Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) reinforce commitment in advancing maritime education

The management of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), led by Director General Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, has reassured the Regional Maritime University (RMU) of their unwavering support and collaboration in maintaining and enhancing the standards of maritime education and training within the country.

During a courtesy visit to the RMU on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Dr. Kamal-Deen expressed a strong interest in the activities of the RMU, particularly as a partner in job creation, especially in the area of seafaring. He highlighted that the GMA has initiated efforts aimed at mass youth employment in the maritime sector.

He commended the management of RMU, led by Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., for their efforts in growing the university despite the challenges, and expressed optimism about a stronger partnership to further promote the activities of the university.

Dr Kamal-Deen emphasised the importance of seafaring activities particularly, recruitment, job creation and securing the necessary sea time for cadets, as the primary responsibility of the GMA.

In this regard, he mentioned that steps have been taken to establish relationships with other seafaring nations to create opportunities for cadets on international vessels.

Additionally, he pledged to help protect the image of both the GMA and the RMU by maintaining the highest levels of competence, noting that Ghanaian seafarers are among the best in the world.

Furthermore, he promised that the challenges facing the university would be directed to the appropriate government authorities to ensure that the necessary resources and equipment are provided for the training of seafarers.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, Dr Brooks Jr., also praised Dr Kamal-Deen Ali for his humility and commitment to the university’s progress.

He briefed the Director General on the background and activities of the university and appealed for his support in improving the university’s infrastructure.

Dr Brooks Jr. noted that the GMA had been supportive of the RMU and urged Dr Kamal-Deen to assist in ensuring that the Government of Ghana pays its annual member states’ contributions to the university.

He congratulated Dr Kamal-Deen on his appointment and expressed his hope for a continued and strengthened relationship between the two institutions.
