

A five-day Wellness at Sea Programme, organized by the Sailors’ Society, opened on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra.

Fully funded by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), the programme is designed to equip students with practical tools to thrive both personally and professionally, focusing on key areas such as resilience, mental health, relationships, financial literacy, physical wellness, trauma awareness and digital life at sea.
This novel initiative being held in Ghana for the first time, is facilitated by Mr. Daniel Taljard, a South African and Ace Yumang Gonzales, a Filipino.

Opening the programme, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Jethro W. Brooks Jr expressed excitement at hosting the training at RMU for the first time, noting that it would significantly prepare cadets with the knowledge needed to survive and excel at sea.

He added that it would also offer students valuable networking opportunities ahead of their maiden voyages and future maritime careers.
He expressed appreciation to the facilitators and organizers for their efforts and encouraged participants to make the most of the programme.

Speaking on behalf of the facilitators, Mr Daniel Taljard also expressed delight in hosting the programme in Ghana for the first time.
He pledged their commitment to ensuring that participants gain relevant lessons to support successful and sustainable maritime careers.

A total of about 100 participants, divided into two groups, will take part in the week-long programme, supported by facilitators from the RMU.
