RMU 17TH Matriculation Ceremony: Constitution of RMU Anti-Sexual Harrasment Committee

17TH MATRICULATION CEREMONY

A total of 517 students took the Matriculation Oath for the 2019/ 2020 Academic Year during the Regional Maritime University’s (RMU) 17thMatriculation Ceremony held at the University Parade Grounds on 2ndNovember, 2019.

The Matriculation Ceremony marks the official acceptance of admitted students into the University. During the Ceremony, all freshmen take the Matriculation Oath to abide by the statutes of the University. The Matriculation Oath was administered by the University Registrar, Dr. Baboucarr Njie and the Deans of Faculty. Speaking at the Ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Elvis Nyarko, congratulated the students for sailing through the rigorous selection process for admission into the University. He expressed the hope that the students would imbibe knowledge,excellence and discipline, which are the tenets of the University.

The Vice Chancellor announced the establishment of an Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee for the redress of any sexual harassment that may occur in the University. This will be done by the employment of best practices in tertiary institutions.

With the current male to female ratio for the sea-going programmes, (i.e. Nautical Science and Marine Engineering) the Vice Chancellor explained that, the University’s drive of encouraging more females to take up sea-going programmes was achieving good results. To this end, there has been a significant increase from eight (8) to sixteen (16) females opting for sea-going programmes in the2019/ 2020 academic year.

The VC thanked the Ghana Shippers Authority for the kind gesture of instituting a Scholarship Scheme for needy but brilliant female students, and called on the Government to set up a special scholarship scheme to support young women pursuing sea-going programmes and other maritime related programmes in RMU.

AWARDS

 Some selected continuing students were awarded for their outstanding performance at the end of the 2018/ 2019 Academic Year. These students, formed the DEANS’ LIST, which is a compilation of students who obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.60or above. The Award shall be a regular feature during Matriculation ceremonies of RMU. Recipients of the Award were drawn from the following faculties of the University.

  1. Faculty of Maritime Studies: A total of fifty-seven (57) students received the Dean’s List award.
  2. Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences: A total of forty-four students received recognition for their outstanding academic performance.

The Ceremony was witnessed by Officials of the University, RMU Staff, parents,students and friends of the media.
