CONFERMENNT OF HONORARY DEGREE
The Honorary Doctor of letters first of its kind in the history of the Regional Maritime University, was instituted by the University Board of Governors as a reward in recognition of exemplary leadership by three highly distinguished personalities in their individual capacities in elevating the University as the premier University in Maritime Education and Training.
The three are H.E John Agyekum Kuffour, former President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, and Captain Aaron Obeng Turkson, former Rector of the RMU.
A citation lauding the three have been paraphrased below:
Citation for H.E John Agyekum Kuffour
“You have distinguished yourself as an astute politician, legislator, statesman and a football enthusiast. An administrator who dedicated your entire life to the development of the people of the Republic of Ghana since the second Republic and as the second President under the Fourth Republic of Ghana, until present. During your leadership, you strengthened and gave impetus to the tenets of democracy, the rule of law, social justice, social and economic government and equal opportunity for all Ghanaians to realize their God given talents” The Regional Maritime University is very plead to bestow on you the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).

In his response, H.E President Kuffour commended Management of RMU for relentless efforts over the years to becoming the premier University in Maritime education and training. The Training by the University, he said was unique and he expressed admiration for the Management of the University over the years to help train personnel for the Maritime Industry. He urged the University to strategically link itself with industry to ensure that students were exposed to practical work before completing their courses.
Citation for President Julius Maaba Bio
“Your Excellency, you have distinguished yourself as excellent statesman, your diplomacy, democracy for the rule of law, social justice and respect for human, have been recognized by the University. The University also took into recognition your interest in industry education as well as your vision for a better Sierra Leone as the President and Commander of Arm forces of the Republic of Sierra. Your Excellency, the Republic of sierra Leone has shown great commitment as one of the five founding member states seeking the progress of the University. The university acknowledges the continues support, your influential and creative leadership. Your diplomacy has played a pivotal role in bringing accelerated development to the good people of the Republic of Sierra Leone. The Regional Maritime University is very plead to bestow on you the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).

In his response President Maaba Boi accepted the Degree bestowed on him and thanked the Board of Governors, Management, Staff of the Regional Maritime University for the conferment. He advised students to be guided by the fact that, the cooperation and partnership of the Regional Maritime University and its member state countries was key to the global advantage that awaits them after their education at the RMU.
Citation for Captain Obeng Turkson
You dedicated your entire working life to the service of the Regional Maritime University. As a lecturer by dint of hard work, you rose through the ranks and attained the high office of the Rector in 2000. You took over the ruins of the then Maritime Academy and with your administrative acumen, you were able to solve the situation in no time. You showed agility and you showed no partiality. Captain Obeng Turkson, it is on records that since your assumption of the position of a Rector, you put measure to the introduction of short courses which has become a major source of income to fund expenses of the University. The Regional Maritime University is plead to bestow on you the Degree of Doctors of Letters ((Honoris Causa).
Receiving the citation is Captain Aaron Obeng Turkson, former Rector of the Regional Maritime University (middle) being presented to by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Elvis Nyarko.
In his response speech, Captain Obeng Turkson, commended Management for the sustenance of the University and thanked the Board of Governors, Management and Staff for their recognition of him over the years. He advised graduating students to be efficient as they venture into the working environment. He paid tribute to the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for establishing the RMU.

13th congregation for the award of Bachelors and Diplomas
The 13th congregation ceremony was the climax of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Regional Maritime University. Historically, the University (RMU) on the day of its 13th congregation conferred Honorary Degree on three highly distinguished personalities and graduated the first group of its Mechanical Engineering programme since its introduction in the 2015 / 2016 Academic year. A total of 396 students graduated with Bachelor’s degree and Diplomas in various fields. Of this number, there were 329 Bachelors and 67 Diplomas.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chancellor and Chairman of Board of Governors, Hon. Dr. James F. Kollie (Republic of Liberia) congratulated the graduands for the successful completion of their individual field of study. He commended parents for the investments made and advised graduands to reciprocate with excellence on the job market.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Elvis Nyarko urged the graduating students to apply the knowledge and skills they had acquired over the years to help the country’s economy, especially within the maritime industry. In his words, he advised students to use practical aspects of their education to improve upon the standards at the various work places they may find themselves in order to standout in the competitive world.
Present at the occasion was the Professor Shi Xin, Vice President of Shanghai Maritime University. In his address he praised the sustained relationship between the RMU and Shanghai Maritime University (SMU). He stated that, SMU would spare no effort to work with RMU to promote the cultivation of international maritime and logistics talents.
The graduands of the various field of discipline were steered by the deanship of the various faculty heads into receiving Degree and Diploma awards.
COMMISSSIONING OF NEW FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES
The University has constructed a two- storey building consisting of fourteen (14) offices, one (1) secretariat and a drawing room for new Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The project was commissioned by the Chancellor and the Chairman of the Regional Maritime University Board of Governors on Friday, 14th June, 2019, a day prior to the 13th congregation. The new edifice according to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Elvis Nyarko was to provide offices for lecturers. This brings to a total of 22 offices added to the stock over the past two years.
These offices would also provide congenial working environment for the staff which will enhance their research output and productivity and enable them to hold consultations with their students for academic guidance.
