On Friday, August 1, 2025, the Regional Maritime University (RMU) hosted students and staff from Sogakope Senior High School (SOGASCO) in the Volta Region as part of an educational and career tour aimed at introducing students to opportunities within the maritime industry.
The visiting delegation, comprising students and teachers from the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) Academy, were taken through a comprehensive orientation on RMU’s academic offerings, professional training pathways, and the broader prospects available in the global maritime sector.
Receiving the delegation, Ms. Matilda Obeng, Marketing Assistant at RMU, delivered a presentation on the University’s history, evolution, and its critical role in training highly skilled maritime professionals across West Africa and beyond. She highlighted RMU’s commitment to academic excellence and practical training, positioning it as a leading institution for maritime training and allied programmes.
During her engagement with the students, Ms. Matilda encouraged them to remain diligent in their academic pursuits, noting that excellence at the secondary school level serves as a strong foundation for entry into professional maritime training. She emphasized that admission into RMU opens doors to rewarding careers in the Maritime, Oil and Gas and other allied fields.
She also noted that the recent acquisition of a fully operational workboat, Handler 2, has significantly enhanced the University’s capacity to provide hands-on, real-world maritime training. The vessel, she explained, is aligned with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW), and supports student preparation for offshore work through mandatory safety and survival training.
In addressing concerns about safety in the maritime industry, Ms. Matilda made reference to the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) Convention, which mandates vessel owners and operators to implement stringent safety measures. She assured the students that RMU adheres to these international protocols to ensure the welfare of all trainees.
An interactive session allowed staff and students to ask insightful questions on academic life at RMU, available career pathways, training requirements, and international employment prospects. The students demonstrated keen interest in understanding the scope and relevance of maritime careers in today’s economy.
The Coordinator of the SOGASCO NSMQ Academy, Mr. Edem Asilevi, expressed appreciation to the University for the warm reception and engaging presentations. He acknowledged the value of the visit in broadening the students’ career perspectives and commended RMU for its dedication to outreach and capacity building.
Mr. Asilevi further indicated that Sogakope SHS would explore opportunities for continued collaboration with RMU, including organizing additional visits to enable more students to benefit from such informative experiences.
The visit by Sogakope SHS to the University forms part of RMU’s broader outreach efforts aimed at promoting awareness of maritime education among senior high school students. Through strategic engagements with schools, RMU continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing future maritime professionals and contributing to the growth of the blue economy in Ghana and the West African region.
