
IMO, in partnership with GMA and the RMU, organized a high-level dialogue in Accra under the theme “Opportunities in the Maritime Sector.” The event aimed to introduce students and stakeholders to emerging career prospects, with a particular focus on green shipping and decarbonization efforts under the IMO-Green Voyage 2050 Programme. This initiative seeks to reduce GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions through technical feasibility studies, risk assessments, stakeholder engagement, and administrative support. Several related initiatives are scheduled for implementation in 2025.

In her keynote address, Ms. Astrid Dispert, Programme Manager for IMO-Green Voyage 2050, underscored the maritime industry’s shift toward sustainability. She emphasized the increasing demand for skilled professionals as shipping companies integrate low-carbon technologies and enhance energy efficiency. According to her, the sector is undergoing a major transformation, creating numerous career opportunities for young people. She initiated the dialogue to foster close collaboration with Ghana, supporting a seamless green transition while ensuring the industry remains competitive and reduces emissions.

Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, applauded the collaboration between IMO and GMA, acknowledging its role in equipping students for the rapidly evolving maritime sector. He also encouraged greater female participation in the industry, emphasizing the IMO’s dedication to gender inclusivity and equal opportunities. Additionally, he urged RMU students to take advantage of the dialogue, as it provides insight into emerging trends and essential training programs that will enhance their career development.

The dialogue provided a platform for students and maritime stakeholders to gain valuable insights into the future of shipping and Ghana’s role in advancing sustainable maritime practices. As the industry transitions toward green shipping, initiatives such as the IMO-Green Voyage 2050 Programme, in collaboration with RMU, will be instrumental in equipping the potential workforce with the skills needed to drive this transformation.
