Commodore Nuno Filipe Cortes Lopez pays courtesy call to RMU management

On Monday, February 24, 2025, Commodore Nuno Filipe Cortes Lopez, General Coordinator of the Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security (SWAIMS) Camoes Implementation Unit, visited the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra to strengthen collaboration and gain deeper insights into the university’s operations.

Commodore Lopez, who is currently in Ghana for the Crews Training Course (CTC) with the Ghana Navy, met with RMU’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., to discuss opportunities for enhancing maritime training and education. He was accompanied by the Honorary Consul of Portugal, Antonio Jose de Matos Fernandes, while RMU’s leadership team included the Provost Dr. Denis Atenhjia, Director of Finance Madam Mary Francess Francis, and Academic Registrar Mr. Jones Addai-Marfo.

Dr. Brooks Jr. reaffirmed RMU’s commitment to the SWAIMS project, noting its successful completion and expressing optimism about the next phase. He extended his appreciation to Commodore Lopez and his team for their continued support, which has significantly contributed to the efficiency and operational capabilities of the Ghana Navy. Highlighting RMU’s future initiatives, Dr. Brooks Jr. announced that the university would soon introduce new programs focused on the Blue Economy and welcomed support for these efforts. He also expressed interest in providing students with hands-on experience aboard Portuguese vessels during their visits to Ghana.

Commending RMU for its global reputation as a leading maritime training institution, Commodore Lopez expressed enthusiasm about exploring further collaboration opportunities. He assured the RMU leadership that his team would continue visiting Ghana for their individual projects while remaining open to deeper partnerships with the university.

The visit reinforced the strong ties between RMU and SWAIMS, paving the way for further maritime security advancements, academic exchange, and capacity-building initiatives in the region.
