On Monday, November 25, 2024, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), through its Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), held discussions with the management of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) to explore a potential collaboration for maritime professional training in 2025.
The meeting, which focused on enhancing capacity-building initiatives for West and Central Africa, covered critical topics such as maritime law, gender empowerment, and human rights enforcement.
Strengthening Maritime Education in Africa
Speaking at the event, Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jr., Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, highlighted the university’s pivotal role in maritime education on the continent. He noted that nearly 90% of African seafarers have benefited directly or indirectly from RMU’s training programs, underscoring the institution’s reputation as a leader in maritime education.
Dr. Brooks assured the UNODC delegation of RMU’s readiness to host the training sessions, citing the university’s state-of-the-art facilities, experienced personnel, and supportive environment.
“Our longstanding partnership with the UN has allowed RMU to make significant contributions to maritime capacity building across Africa. This collaboration will further our mission to equip maritime professionals with the skills they need to meet global standards,” he said.
UNODC’s Commitment to Maritime Development
The UNODC delegation, led by Dr. Abbas Daher Djama, Regional Coordinator for the Atlantic Ocean Section of GMCP, and Mr. Francis Izegaegbe Omiunu, Associate Programme Management Officer, expressed strong optimism about the collaboration.
Dr. Djama emphasized the partnership’s potential to enhance the capacity of maritime professionals while contributing to the sustainable development of Africa’s maritime sector.
“This initiative will not only strengthen maritime law enforcement but also promote gender empowerment and human rights in the region, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing maritime challenges,” he stated.
A Vision for 2025 and Beyond
The proposed collaboration underscores the shared commitment of RMU and UNODC to advancing maritime education and addressing critical issues affecting the sector. By equipping professionals with cutting-edge knowledge and skills, the partnership aims to support Africa’s maritime development while promoting international standards in training and enforcement.
RMU looks forward to this collaboration as part of its ongoing mission to drive innovation and excellence in maritime education across the continent.
