The Board of Governors of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) has conferred on the President of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow, an Honorary Doctorate Degree. This was done during the 21st Meeting of the Board which was held in The Gambia from the 4th to the 7th of December, 2018, in keeping with tradition where, annually, the Board Meeting is held in one of the five member countries who govern the University namely: Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The Honorary award was in recognition of the contribution of the Gambian President to the progress of society and academia and this was the first Honorary Doctorate of RMU to be awarded to a statesman who has demonstrated a strong commitment to democracy, rule of Law, social justice, respect for human rights, among others.
The Chancellor of RMU and Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dr. James F. Kollie, Commissioner/CEO, Liberia Maritime Authority, Monrovia, Republic of Liberia, touted H.E. President Barrow’s visionary leadership and he said this was taken into consideration in the decision to decorate him with the honorary degree. These sentiments of the Board Chairman were also shared by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Elvis Nyarko.
In his acceptance speech, H.E. President Adama Barrow dedicated the Award to the people of The Gambia for their support.
Present at this auspicious occasion were the Ministers of State and Experts of the five member countries, Management, Staff and Student Representatives of RMU as well as other dignitaries.
